Refrain is an exploration through the creation of physical manifestations of an intangible experience--self-censorship. For my Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis in 2014, I created 3 wearable sculptures and 2 wall pieces that each embodied different aspects to self-censorship. Although my background is in metalsmithing, I made a conscious choice to remain open to alternative materials for this body of work. I chose to concentrate on wearables for the neck/shoulders/chest area because that area of the body generally holds the weight of having to hold back communication. Refrain exhibits the duality of self-censorship, as well, not only showing different levels of restriction, but also of comfort--telling the viewer, this is a self-inflicted situation. We are the only ones holding ourselves back.
